Implantology Year Course - FAQs

Training & Education

Here is a list of our most frequently asked questions-

Does the course meet the GDC requirements?

Yes. The course not only meets the GDC's requirements for training standards in implant dentistry but exceeds them. After successful completion of the course and attainment of the certificate, you will be able to place implants in your own practice safe in the knowledge that you have exceeded the GDC requirements. We will also help you to start your career pathway in implant dentistry and provide post-course mentoring for your treatment planning free for the next 12 months after certification.

Has the course been assessed by any other bodies?

Yes. The course was inspected and assessed by the FGDP(UK) in 2011. We then received full accreditation from the FGDP(UK).

Why should I choose this course?

Nobel Biocare has unprecedented experience in dental implantology. The company is the market leader in the UK and worldwide. Nobel Biocare has been there since the very beginning, starting with the collaboration with Professor Branemark, the originator of modern titanium dental implants, in the early 1970s. The depth of research, support and expertise that Nobel Biocare can bring to your training will give you the best possible start with your new career in dental implantology.

Do I need to have had any previous experience with implants?

No. The course is designed to take a general dental practitioner who is a complete beginner and finish with a confident, safe implantologist. All you need is motivation! If you wish to bring your patients for treatment on the course you MUST HAVE FULL GDC REGISTRATION.

I am worried that I may not be able to recruit patients for the course.

This question is answered by Stuart Ellis, the Course Director - 'This is by far the most common concern amongst participants but is rarely an issue. For a start the patients trust you, their own dentist, the most. At our referral centre in Cambridge the majority of our referred patients usually express disappointment that their own dentist does not provide the implant treatment. They would much rather be treated by their own dentist than be referred to us, because that is the practitioner who they are used to, are comfortable with and trust. You can also offer your patients lower fee rates if they are treated on the course at a Live Surgery Study Day, saving the patient up to £1,000 over the normal UK average price of a restored implant. Add these incentives together and most patients are more than happy to travel to the training centre, sometimes for a long distance.'

Does the course count as Verifiable CPD?

Yes. The Year Course provides 70 hours of Fully Verifiable CPD for GDC Lifelong Learning purposes in addition to 10 credits towards the FGDP(UK) Career Pathway.

What if I can not make some of the course dates?

If you can not make one of the dates, due to holidays, illness etc, you can attend the same module on the following year's course for no further cost.

How can I get more information?

For more information you can email Alison, the course manager, or Stuart Ellis, the course director. Alternatively feel free to give us a call on 01223 328948.

I need to travel a long way to the Study Days. Where can I stay?

Accomodation is available at the Moller Centre, Churchill College, which is the location of the Theory Study Days. There are also hotels (Premier Inn and Travelodge) situated 5 minsutes away from Cavendish House. We can help to arrange accommodation for you. We can also arrange pickups from Stanstead Airport and Cambridge Railway Station.

Will I get one-on-one training?

Yes. The provision of one-to-one surgical training is an essential and central component of the Implantology Year Course. One-to-One training can also be provided outside of the Live Surgery days on an individual basis for any delegate and at no further cost to the delegate.

Would it not be better to learn with a number of different systems rather than just the one?

The course director, who has experienced many systems, believes that it if difficult enough as it is to learn implant dentistry without having to learn all of the numerous, and often complex, differences between one system and the next as well. Nobel Biocare is the worlds biggest implant company. We think that the simplicity of the Nobel system makes this an ideal system to learn with.

How can I train my nurses?

Nobel Biocare offer dedicated nurse training programs.

Can I spread the course fees over the year?

Yes. A deposit of £400 secures your place on the Implantology Year Course. £1,200 is then paid in three instalments over the course of the year. This totals £4,000 for the full Implantology Year Course. Course fees are subject to VAT, in the usual way.

Does my patient pay reduced surgical fees to be treated on the course?

Absolutely. We recognised that participants may need to offer an incentive to encourage their patients to have implants placed on the course. Patients can save hundreds of pounds by paying greatly reduced surgery fees to the training centre, if operated on a Live Surgery Day. The fee options can be accessed by CLICKING HERE

Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

Yes. On enrolment you will have the opportunity to inform us of any dietary requirements.

When I gain the 'certificate' at the end of the program what will I be able to do?

Upon completion of the certificate you will have been trained to a standard and level that will enable you to confidently plan and provide straight forward implant treatment on your own patients in your own practice. You will have the treatment planning skills to enable you to identify advanced and potentially complex cases.

What is required for certification?

To receive the 'certificate in implantology' you will need to have completed the theoretical and practical aspects of the course. Theory is provided by way of lectures and seminars. For the practical aspects you will have received one-on-one training in the placement and restoration of implants in your own patients as well as witnessed numerous demonstrations. You will keep a log book of the cases that you have completed under the one-on-one training. Each stage of treatment will be signed off in your log book by one of our surgical trainers. Your log book will also record every practical demonstration that you have witnessed and every case that has been mentored in the first year following course completion. Treatment planning mentoring is free for the first 12 months after you complete the Year Course.

I already do some implant treatment but need to satisfy the new GDC requirements. Is this course for me?

Absolutely! Many of our delegates have previous experience of implantology, some for many years. This course will allow you to update your knowledge and satisfy the new GDC regulations which apply to experienced implamtologists as well as beginners.

Can I continue training after the year course?

Absolutely. Gaining the certificate is the starting point of your career pathway in dental implantology. We can then help you to gain further experience and more advanced training as your career progresses. Following experience in straight forward implant treatment you should be able to progress to training in advanced and complex implant treatments in the future.

What are the course's Aims & Objectives?

Our aim is to take GDPs, with no previous implant experience being necessary, and provide training in excess of the GDC requirements over the course of a year to enable these practitioners to safely and confidently provide straight forward implant treatment in their own practices. Post course mentoring and support will always be available to every certificate holder. The treatment planning mentoring is free of charge for the first 12 months after completion of the Year Course.
